Abandoned by Others

When faced with potential dangers, threats or public failure, those who formally professed their loyalty may abandon us; ESPECIALLY when we decide to demonstrate courageous faith.

We must not placed our faith in humans. As we well know, they often fail. Our faith must be firmly placed in the Lord God. When all others forsake us, He will not.

Our confidence is not due to our perfect circumstances. Our confidence is not due to our powerful friends and family. Our confidence is due to a perfect Lord.

We need to be patient. God’s children always endure. Very soon, those who threaten us and those who failed the test of loyalty will be gone and we will be left standing hand in hand with the Lord.

Note: Our post-modern minds balk at being addressed as “worms” (v.14). However, it is precisely that fact -  that God is so much more powerful than we are, that in comparison to Him we are worms -  that gives us comfort in life’s harsh circumstances.

Do not rely on fickle humans. David’s men had just come from a great victory. They returned to find their homes destroyed and their families kidnapped and instead of trusting their captain to find a solution, they began wanting to kill him. Instead, find your strength on the immutable Divine One.

In view of God’s eternal omnipotence and unimaginable loyalty, who needs weak humans anyway?

Our Master knows what it’s like to be abandoned. He sympathizes.

There is an inherent loneliness in ministry. The Apostle Paul was faithfully serving in God’s kingdom and Demas’ materialistic heart cause him to abandon Paul. Paul also felt abandoned because his fellow workers were off in other lands serving. Then Alexander the Coppersmith also caused a lot of trouble for Paul, because Paul’s preaching was hurting Alexander’s business. We need to take heart in Paul’s statement – “the Lord stood with me and strengthened me…the Lord will rescue me…and will bring me safely into His heavenly kingdom.” We have the same Lord Paul did.
