Abomination

When someone considers something abominable, it is loathsome or disgusting to them. Their hate is coupled with disgust. An abomination is an action that is considered particularly vicious, loathsome or vile.

God gave us a summarized list of things He considers abominable.

  • Proverbs 6:16-19 HCSB  Six things the LORD hates; in fact, seven are detestable to Him:  17  arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,  18  a heart that plots wicked schemes, feet eager to run to evil,  19  a lying witness who gives false testimony, and one who stirs up trouble among brothers.

Eating certain creatures was considered an abomination.

  • Leviticus 7:21 HCSB  If someone touches anything unclean, whether human uncleanness, an unclean animal, or any unclean, detestable creature, and eats meat from the LORD's fellowship sacrifice, that person must be cut off from his people."
  • Leviticus 11:10-13, 20, 23, 41-44 HCSB  But these are to be detestable to you: everything that does not have fins and scales in the seas or streams, among all the swarming things and other living creatures in the water.  11  They are to remain detestable to you; you must not eat any of their meat, and you must detest their carcasses.  12  Everything in the water that does not have fins and scales will be detestable to you.  13  "You are to detest these birds. They must not be eaten because they are detestable: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture… "All winged insects that walk on all fours are to be detestable to you… All other winged insects that have four feet are to be detestable to you… All the creatures that swarm on the earth are detestable; they must not be eaten.  42  Do not eat any of the creatures that swarm on the earth, anything that moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet, for they are detestable.  43  Do not become contaminated by any creature that swarms; do not become unclean or defiled by them.  44  For I am the LORD your God, so you must consecrate yourselves and be holy because I am holy. You must not defile yourselves by any swarming creature that crawls on the ground.
  • Leviticus 20:25 HCSB  Therefore you must distinguish the clean animal from the unclean one, and the unclean bird from the clean one. You are not to make yourselves detestable by any land animal, bird, or whatever crawls on the ground; I have set these apart as unclean for you.
  • Deuteronomy 14:3-22 HCSB  "You must not eat any detestable thing.  4  These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat,  5  the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope, and the mountain sheep.  6  You may eat any animal that has hooves divided in two and chews the cud.  7  But among the ones that chew the cud or have divided hooves, you are not to eat these: the camel, the hare, and the hyrax, though they chew the cud, they do not have hooves--they are unclean for you;  8  and the pig, though it has hooves, it does not chew the cud--it is unclean for you. You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses.  9  "You may eat everything from the water that has fins and scales,  10  but you may not eat anything that does not have fins and scales--it is unclean for you.  11  "You may eat every clean bird,  12  but these are the ones you may not eat: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,  13  the kite, the various kinds of falcon,  14  every kind of raven,  15  the ostrich, the short-eared owl, the gull, the various kinds of hawk,  16  the little owl, the long-eared owl, the white owl,  17  the desert owl, the osprey, the cormorant,  18  the stork, the various kinds of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat.  19  All winged insects are unclean for you; they may not be eaten.  20  But you may eat every clean flying creature.  21  "You are not to eat any carcass; you may give it to a resident alien within your gates, and he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. For you are a holy people belonging to the LORD your God. You must not boil a young goat in its mother's milk.  22  "Each year you are to set aside a tenth of all the produce grown in your fields.

Some of the idolatrous and immoral customs of the Gentiles are abominable.

  • Leviticus 18:26-30 HCSB  But you are to keep My statutes and ordinances. You must not commit any of these abominations--not the native or the foreigner who lives among you.  27  For the men who were in the land prior to you have committed all these abominations, and the land has become defiled.  28  If you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it has vomited out the nations that were before you.  29  Any person who does any of these abominations must be cut off from his people.  30  You must keep My instruction to not do any of the detestable customs that were practiced before you, so that you do not defile yourselves by them; I am the LORD your God."
  • Deuteronomy 18:9-12 HCSB  "When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not imitate the detestable customs of those nations.  10  No one among you is to make his son or daughter pass through the fire, practice divination, tell fortunes, interpret omens, practice sorcery,  11  cast spells, consult a medium or a familiar spirit, or inquire of the dead.  12  Everyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and the LORD your God is driving out the nations before you because of these detestable things.
  • Deuteronomy 20:16-18 HCSB  However, you must not let any living thing survive among the cities of these people the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.  17  You must completely destroy them--the Hittite, Amorite, Canaanite, Perizzite, Hivite, and Jebusite--as the LORD your God has commanded you,  18  so that they won't teach you to do all the detestable things they do for their gods, and you sin against the LORD your God.
  • 2 Chronicles 28:1-5 HCSB  Ahaz was 20 years old when he became king; he reigned 16 years in Jerusalem. He did not do what was right in the LORD's sight like his forefather David,  2  for he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and made cast images of the Baals.  3  He burned incense in the Valley of Hinnom and burned his children in the fire, imitating the detestable practices of the nations the LORD had dispossessed before the Israelites.  4  He sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.  5  So the LORD his God handed Ahaz over to the king of Aram. He attacked him and took many captives to Damascus. Ahaz was also handed over to the king of Israel, who struck him with great force:
  • 2 Chronicles 33:1-11 HCSB  Manasseh was 12 years old when he became king; he reigned 55 years in Jerusalem.  2  He did what was evil in the LORD's sight, imitating the detestable practices of the nations that the LORD had dispossessed before the Israelites.  3  He rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had torn down and reestablished the altars for the Baals. He made Asherah poles, and he worshiped the whole heavenly host and served them.  4  He built altars in the LORD's temple, where the LORD had said: "Jerusalem is where My name will remain forever."  5  He built altars to the whole heavenly host in both courtyards of the LORD's temple.  6  He passed his sons through the fire in the Valley of Hinnom. He practiced witchcraft, divination, and sorcery, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did a great deal of evil in the LORD's sight, provoking Him.  7  Manasseh set up a carved image of the idol he had made, in God's temple, about which God had said to David and his son Solomon: "I will establish My name forever in this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.  8  I will never again remove the feet of the Israelites from upon the land where I stationed your ancestors, if only they will be careful to do all that I have commanded them through Moses--all the law, statutes, and judgments."  9  So Manasseh caused Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to stray so that they did worse evil than the nations the LORD had destroyed before the Israelites.  10  The LORD spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they didn't listen.  11  So He brought against them the military commanders of the king of Assyria. They captured Manasseh with hooks, bound him with bronze shackles, and took him to Babylon.
  • 2 Chronicles 36:14-17 HCSB  All the leaders of the priests and the people multiplied their unfaithful deeds, imitating all the detestable practices of the nations, and they defiled the LORD's temple that He had consecrated in Jerusalem.  15  But the LORD God of their ancestors sent word against them by the hand of his messengers, sending them time and time again, for He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place.  16  But they kept ridiculing God's messengers, despising His words, and scoffing at His prophets, until the LORD's wrath was so stirred up against His people that there was no remedy.  17  So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their choice young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary. He had no pity on young man and virgin or elderly and aged; He handed them all over to him.
  • Ezra 9:1, 11 HCSB  After these things had been done, the leaders approached me and said: "The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites have not separated themselves from the surrounding peoples whose detestable practices are like those of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites… You gave through Your servants the prophets, saying: "The land you are entering to possess is an impure land. The surrounding peoples have filled it from end to end with their uncleanness by their impurity and detestable practices.

Human sacrifice is abominable.

  • Leviticus 18:21 HCSB  "You are not to make any of your children pass through the fire to Molech. Do not profane the name of your God; I am the LORD.
  • Deuteronomy 12:31 HCSB  You must not do the same to the LORD your God, because they practice for their gods every detestable thing the LORD hates. They even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.
  • Deuteronomy 18:10-11 HCSB  No one among you is to make his son or daughter pass through the fire, practice divination, tell fortunes, interpret omens, practice sorcery,  11  cast spells, consult a medium or a familiar spirit, or inquire of the dead.
  • Jeremiah 32:35 HCSB  They have built the high places of Baal in the Valley of Hinnom to make their sons and daughters pass through the fire to Molech--something I had not commanded them. I had never entertained the thought that they do this detestable act causing Judah to sin!

Idolatry and leading others into idolatry is abominable.

  • Deuteronomy 13:1-16 HCSB  "If a prophet or someone who has dreams arises among you and proclaims a sign or wonder to you,  2  and that sign or wonder he has promised you comes about, but he says, 'Let us follow other gods,' which you have not known, 'and let us worship them,'  3  do not listen to that prophet's words or to that dreamer. For the LORD your God is testing you to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and all your soul.  4  You must follow the LORD your God and fear Him. You must keep His commands and listen to His voice; you must worship Him and remain faithful to Him.  5  That prophet or dreamer must be put to death, because he has urged rebellion against the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the place of slavery, to turn you from the way the LORD your God has commanded you to walk. You must purge the evil from you.  6  "If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you embrace, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, 'Let us go and worship other gods'--which neither you nor your fathers have known,  7  any of the gods of the peoples around you, near you or far from you, from one end of the earth to the other--  8  you must not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity, and do not spare him or shield him.  9  Instead, you must kill him. Your hand is to be the first against him to put him to death, and then the hands of all the people.  10  Stone him to death for trying to turn you away from the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.  11  All Israel will hear and be afraid, and they will no longer do anything evil like this among you.  12  "If you hear it said about one of your cities the LORD your God is giving you to live in,  13  that wicked men have sprung up among you, led the inhabitants of their city astray, and said, 'Let us go and worship other gods,' which you have not known,  14  you are to inquire, investigate, and interrogate thoroughly. If the report turns out to be true that this detestable thing has happened among you,  15  you must strike down the inhabitants of that city with the sword. Completely destroy everyone in it as well as its livestock with the sword.  16  You are to gather all its spoil in the middle of the city square and completely burn up the city and all its spoil for the LORD your God. The city must remain a mound of ruins forever; it is not to be rebuilt.
  • Deuteronomy 17:2-7 HCSB  "If a man or woman among you in one of your towns that the LORD your God will give you is discovered doing evil in the sight of the LORD your God and violating His covenant  3  and has gone to worship other gods by bowing down to the sun, moon, or all the stars in the sky--which I have forbidden--  4  and if you are told or hear about it, you must investigate it thoroughly. If the report turns out to be true that this detestable thing has happened in Israel,  5  you must bring out to your gates that man or woman who has done this evil thing and stone them to death.  6  The one condemned to die is to be executed on the testimony of two or three witnesses. No one is to be executed on the testimony of a single witness.  7  The witnesses' hands are to be the first in putting him to death, and after that, the hands of all the people. You must purge the evil from you.
  • Deuteronomy 27:15 HCSB  'Cursed is the person who makes a carved idol or cast image, which is detestable to the LORD, the work of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret.' And all the people will reply, 'Amen!'
  • Deuteronomy 29:17-18 HCSB  You saw their detestable images and idols made of wood, stone, silver, and gold, which were among them.  18  Be sure there is no man, woman, clan, or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the LORD our God to go and worship the gods of those nations. Be sure there is no root among you bearing poisonous and bitter fruit.
  • Deuteronomy 32:15-17 HCSB  Then Jeshurun became fat and rebelled--you became fat, bloated, and gorged. He abandoned the God who made him and scorned the Rock of his salvation.  16  They provoked His jealousy with foreign gods; they enraged Him with detestable practices.  17  They sacrificed to demons, not God, to gods they had not known, new gods that had just arrived, which your fathers did not fear.
  • 1 Kings 11:5-7 HCSB  Solomon followed Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians, and Milcom, the detestable idol of the Ammonites.  6  Solomon did what was evil in the LORD's sight, and unlike his father David, he did not completely follow the LORD.  7  At that time, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh, the detestable idol of Moab, and for Milcom, the detestable idol of the Ammonites on the hill across from Jerusalem.
  • 1 Kings 21:25-26 HCSB  Still, there was no one like Ahab, who devoted himself to do what was evil in the LORD's sight, because his wife Jezebel incited him.  26  He committed the most detestable acts by going after idols as the Amorites had, whom the LORD had dispossessed before the Israelites.
  • 2 Kings 23:13-16 HCSB  The king also defiled the high places that were across from Jerusalem, to the south of the Mount of Destruction, which Solomon king of Israel had built for Ashtoreth, the detestable idol of the Sidonians; for Chemosh, the detestable idol of Moab; and for Milcom, the abomination of the Ammonites.  14  He broke the sacred pillars into pieces, cut down the Asherah poles, then filled their places with human bones.  15  He even tore down the altar at Bethel and the high place that Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin, had made. Then he burned the high place, crushed it to dust, and burned the Asherah.  16  As Josiah turned, he saw the tombs there on the mountain. He sent someone to take the bones out of the tombs, and he burned them on the altar. He defiled it according to the word of the LORD proclaimed by the man of God who proclaimed these things.
  • 2 Chronicles 15:8 HCSB  When Asa heard these words and the prophecy of Azariah son of Oded the prophet, he took courage and removed the detestable idols from the whole land of Judah and Benjamin and from the cities he had captured in the hill country of Ephraim. He renovated the altar of the LORD that was in front of the vestibule of the LORD's temple.
  • 2 Chronicles 34:33 HCSB  So Josiah removed everything that was detestable from all the lands belonging to the Israelites, and he required all who were present in Israel to serve the LORD their God. Throughout his reign they did not turn aside from following the LORD God of their ancestors.
  • Isaiah 41:21-24 HCSB  "Submit your case," says the LORD. "Present your arguments," says Jacob's King.  22  "Let them come and tell us what will happen. Tell us the past events, so that we may reflect on it and know the outcome. Or tell us the future.  23  Tell us the coming events, then we will know that you are gods. Indeed, do something good or bad, then we will be in awe and perceive.  24  Look, you are nothing and your work is worthless. Anyone who chooses you is detestable.
  • Isaiah 44:9-20 HCSB  All who make idols are nothing, and what they treasure does not profit. Their witnesses do not see or know anything, so they will be put to shame.  10  Who makes a god or casts a metal image for no profit?  11  Look, all its worshipers will be put to shame, and the craftsmen are humans. They all will assemble and stand; they all will be startled and put to shame.  12  The ironworker labors over the coals, shapes the idol with hammers, and works it with his strong arm. Also he grows hungry and his strength fails; he doesn't drink water and is faint.  13  The woodworker stretches out a measuring line, he outlines it with a stylus; he shapes it with chisels and outlines it with a compass. He makes it according to a human likeness, like a beautiful person, to dwell in a temple.  14  He cuts down cedars for his use, or he takes a cypress or an oak. He lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest. He plants a laurel, and the rain makes it grow.  15  It serves as fuel for man. He takes some of it and warms himself; also he kindles a fire and bakes bread; he even makes it into a god and worships it; he makes it an idol and bows down to it.  16  He burns half of it in a fire, and he roasts meat on that half. He eats the roast and is satisfied. He warms himself and says, "Ah! I am warm, I see the blaze."  17  He makes a god or his idol with the rest of it. He bows down to it and worships; He prays to it, "Save me, for you are my god."  18  Such people do not comprehend and cannot understand, for He has shut their eyes so they cannot see, and their minds so they cannot understand.  19  No one reflects, no one has the perception or insight to say, "I burned half of it in the fire, I also baked bread on its coals, I roasted meat and ate. I will make something detestable with the rest of it, and I will bow down to a block of wood."  20  He feeds on ashes. His deceived mind has led him astray, and he cannot deliver himself, or say, "Isn't there a lie in my right hand?"

But they are not gods.
  • Jeremiah 44:3-6, 22 HCSB  because of their evil ways that provoked Me to anger, going and burning incense to serve other gods they, you, and your fathers did not know.  4  So I sent you all My servants the prophets time and time again, saying, Don't do this detestable thing that I hate.  5  But they did not listen or pay attention; they did not turn from their evil or stop burning incense to other gods.  6  So My fierce wrath poured forth and burned in Judah's cities and Jerusalem's streets so that they became the desolate ruin they are today… The LORD can no longer bear your evil deeds and the detestable acts you have committed, so your land has become a waste, a desolation, and an object of cursing, without inhabitant, as you see today.
  • Ezekiel 20:7-8, 30 HCSB  I also said to them: Each of you must throw away the detestable things that are before your eyes and not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.  8  "But they rebelled against Me and were unwilling to listen to Me. None of them threw away the detestable things that were before their eyes, and they did not forsake the idols of Egypt. So I considered pouring out My wrath on them, exhausting My anger against them within the land of Egypt "Therefore say to the house of Israel: This is what the Lord GOD says: Are you defiling yourselves the way your fathers did, and prostituting yourselves with their detestable things?
  • Ezekiel 37:23 HCSB  They will not defile themselves any more with their idols, their detestable things, and all their transgressions. I will save them from all their apostasies by which they sinned, and I will cleanse them. Then they will be My people, and I will be their God.

  • 2 Kings 23:24 HCSB  In addition, Josiah removed the mediums, the spiritists, household idols, images, and all the detestable things that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has rejected you as king.

He's a glutton and a drunkard.'  21  Then all the men of his city will stone him to death. You must purge the evil from you, and all Israel will hear and be afraid.

Or what fellowship does light have with darkness?  15  What agreement does Christ have with Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?  16  And what agreement does God's sanctuary have with idols? For we are the sanctuary of the living God, as God said: I will dwell among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be My people.  17  Therefore, come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord; do not touch any unclean thing, and I will welcome you.  18  I will be a Father to you, and you will be sons and daughters to Me, says the Lord Almighty.

For even their females exchanged natural sexual intercourse for what is unnatural.  27  The males in the same way also left natural sexual intercourse with females and were inflamed in their lust for one another. Males committed shameless acts with males and received in their own persons the appropriate penalty for their perversion.  28  And because they did not think it worthwhile to have God in their knowledge, God delivered them over to a worthless mind to do what is morally wrong.
