Shayla: Should a person follow her fears or her heart?
Meforshim:
It’s difficult to know how to answer this question because much depends on your definition of the terms and the condition of your heart. If you have not yet submitted your life and primary loyalty to the sovereignty of Christ, then you remain in unbelief and are yet subject to God’s severity (Romans 11:22-23).
If you have bowed the knee to your rightful King and have thus been adopted into God’s family and have become a new creation; then for you old things have passed away and new things have come. (2 Corinthians 5:17). In that case, the Spirit lives within you (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) and you should certainly heed that divine voice.
In regards to fears, if you are referring to your fear of God, then that should always drive you to obedience for fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge (Proverbs 1:7).
However, if you are a child of God and yet struggle with fears then I recommend you meditate on Romans 8:14-15 which says, “All those led by God's Spirit are God's sons. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father!"
